Randi and her twin brother, Tyler, didn’t think it was such a great idea for their family to spend the summer in a vacant house in a small town called Blairingville. Boringville seemed more like it. But as it turns out, the vacation was anything but boring! There’s a surprise in every closet here—and not the good kind. Alien creatures are lurking, mysterious dolls are growing, and there’s a sinister twelve-year-old boy with a powerful hypnotic pendant who may hold the key to the entire mystery. Now if Randi can just escape a monster’s clutches, send some space visitors back to who knows where, and regain control of her free will, she might just get her family back home in one piece. It’s another scary good read from the master of shriek-out-loud horror, R.L. Stine.

  • The Sea Creature

    Curtis Patrick Lee

eBook (Sea Creature Books Eugene, Or., Sept. 1, 2004)
"Now- as has been since the beginnings of life on Earth-since the very creation of the Universe and before. There are mysteries, which like the the darkest, unseen reaches of that Universe remain far too great and vast for human mind to comprehend. The omnipowerful, omnipresent hand that for what reason we cannot ever know gives with its magic touch rise to all life-force on the Universe, moved fleet, and with favor through the darkness of the ocean deep- 'to awaken' its long lost child from its brumal sleep." An earthquake spawned Tsunami capsizes the small boat of a young Japanese boy fishing in the sea of Japan. The result is an epic tale of survival on the ocean realm against the gravest of dangers and daunting odds. In the course of this savage struggle to live another hour much less day, a most unlikely friendship is formed between lost souls hurled together by not only the wild ragings of the sea-...but by the infinite powers of all space and time. A moving tale about that which must lie dormant for so long within us, friendship, the indomitable spirit, and ultimately- coming back. Curtis Patrick Lee
  • Spots Counting Creatures From Sky to Sea

    Carolyn Lesser, Laura Regan

    Paperback (Scholastic, March 15, 2000)
"Spotted creatures wait for you. Snoop and find them -- count them too." From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2-In this attractive book, children are invited to count a variety of creatures with spots. Each two-page spread features an oil-and-gouache painting of an animal (or group of the same animals) with a few words describing it on the verso and the creature's name and a number from 1 to 10 on the recto, e.g., "Slinking, prowling, hunting spots...two sleek jaguars." While the pictures and text complement one another beautifully, the art is the real scene-stealer here. Spectacular double-page paintings present the animal(s) in dramatic detail, demanding repeated viewings. Although the somewhat sophisticated vocabulary may make this title less accessible to newly independent readers, the lyrical text and repetitive word patterns make it a good read-aloud choice. The endpage discusses the creatures' habitats. A nicely designed, slightly different entry for concept sections that's sure to have tremendous appeal, especially with nature enthusiasts.
